Strengthening of women participation in public and political life

Historically, women in Albania have had fewer opportunities to realize and fulfill their potentials. Even during the communist regime, when gender equalities were formally required to be respected, women’s role in politics and decision making has been inferior compare to men. After the fall of communism started a new era that called for building of a democratic society in Albania. As this process of transformation proved to be difficult for the whole population, it is accompanied too with data that are indicating a lower women’s participation in public and political life.

The study (put a link with studies) provided information on the concrete social factors which create obstacles for women to take part in the public life of the region and provided recommendations for abolishing the obstacles for women’s self-realization and to approve the real quality of women and men. One hundred interviews were conducted from September-October 2004 with representatives of women from public administration, public sector, businesswomen, students, unemployed women and women involved in politics. Questions asked during the interviews focused on their participation in public and political life and the presence of women’s discrimination in Albanian society.

The gender audit consisted of several stages. These included:

  • The preparation stage consisted of an analysis of the level of representation of women in local government,
  • A study of the Albanian and international experience in gender democracy and conscious-forming at the societal level, and
  • Meetings with local authorities, local elected officials and leaders of NGOs about the necessity and step by step plan of gender research to be conducted.
